Passion for the Past, Shared with the Present

October 7, 2024.

Looking for a unique outing that’s fun for all ages? Let’s talk about a local gem that’s brimming with history, hands-on experiences, and plenty of charm—the Leduc West Antique Society! Nestled just outside of Leduc, this living museum is all about preserving and celebrating the rich heritage of Alberta’s agricultural past. It’s a place where passion meets preservation, where you can step back in time and explore the treasures of yesteryear. Here’s why you should put it on your must-visit list.

Hooper Place is a replica building, in the style of Hooper and Co. Coachbuilders of England. That were known as one of the best coach builders in England, specializing in Rolls Royce and Bentley chassis.

Hooper Place was built large enough to house an impressive car collection, including some antique Rolls Royce and Bentley automobiles.

The Leduc West Antique Society was founded in 1990 by a group of locals who didn’t want the stories of the past to be forgotten. They gathered antique tractors, vintage machinery, and restored historic buildings—all to share the vibrant history of our region. Today, the society’s grounds span over 50 acres, with barns, blacksmith shops, and even a replica town! But it’s more than just a place to look at old stuff; it’s a community driven by passion. Volunteers keep this slice of history alive, preserving artifacts and passing down skills that have long since faded from everyday life.

The Edmonton Power Historical Foundation is a non-profit society dedicated to preserving the history of electrical power in the City of Edmonton and the Province of Alberta. Their main goal is to educate and entertain current and future generations, by collecting, restoring and displaying artifacts and historical documents. EPHF is located at the Alberta Heritage Exposition Park (LWAS) and stores artifacts, interactive displays, fun games for the kids and an educational experience for all.

This church was originally built in the Telfordville area, using cut and squared local logs. Construction began in 1934 and was completed in 1936. It was donated to LWAS by its parishioners.

The idea was to preserve the history of Leduc, Calmar, Thorsby and surrounding communities for future generations to give them a glimpse of what life was like in times past. Their love for antique farming equipment, tools, and machinery blossomed into a unique collection that now spans multiple decades. Walking through the society’s grounds feels like stepping back in time, with beautifully restored buildings and an array of historical exhibits that transport you to a bygone era.

Events That Bring History to Life

One of the best ways to experience Leduc West is during one of their special events, including concert events on the outdoor stage (stay tuned!)

Here’s what you can look forward to:

  • Annual Harvest Fair: Feel the nostalgia of harvest season with antique threshing and machinery demonstrations. It’s like seeing history in action as you watch how crops were processed in the past.
  • Vintage Car Shows: If you’re into classic cars, Leduc West’s vintage vehicle events are a must-see. The polished chrome and retro designs will transport you back to an era when cars were built to turn heads!
  • Leduc West Annual Exposition: Perfect for kids and the young at heart, these family days include train rides around the property, ice cream treats, and a chance to explore the heritage village. It’s a day full of hands-on fun, from exploring a blacksmith shop to checking out the toy museum.
  • Country Christmas Convoy: Dazzling display as 80+ trucks, all lit up, convoy from Blackjacks Roadhouse to join the Leduc Kinsmen Club at the Leduc Country Christmas Lights—supporting the Leduc Food Bank & Leduc Santa’s Helpers.

The Dniester School was moved to Alberta Heritage Exposition Park from its original location, three miles west of Thorsby. The 1928 building was restored by LWAS volunteers.

Did You Know?

Here are a few fun tidbits about Leduc West Antique Society that might surprise you:

  • Steam Power in Action: Did you know that Leduc West is home to fully operational steam engines? Seeing one of these old giants chug to life is an unforgettable experience, and it’s a reminder of how powerful—and loud—these machines once were!
  • Over 100 Years of History: Some of the buildings on site are over a century old! Volunteers have lovingly restored them, including an old church, schoolhouse, and even a general store stocked with nostalgic finds.
  • It’s All Volunteer-Powered: The magic of Leduc West is kept alive by volunteers who put their hearts into maintaining the grounds and running the events. If you’re passionate about history and looking for a way to give back, they’re always looking for new members to join the community.

Come For the History, Stay for the Stories

A visit to the Leduc West Antique Society isn’t just about looking at old machines or taking a stroll through historic buildings—it’s about connecting with the past through the stories and passion of the people who have kept it alive. Whether you’re a history buff, a family looking for a fun outing, or someone who just loves a good story, this is a place that will leave you with a smile and maybe a new appreciation for the way things used to be.

The park is open for several events during the year and can also be booked for school tours, large groups, or some park buildings are available to rent for special events.  It is not open to the public, but you can book a tour here.
