What are Alberta Approved Farmers’ Markets?
It should come as no surprise, but farmers’ markets have been around for a LONG time! Back in the early 1900’s, farmers throughout Central Alberta would bring their produce into Leduc to sell even before a formal market was organized.
Things changed in 1973 when the Minister of Agriculture established the Alberta Approved Farmers’ Market Program – guidelines and best practices were put in place to ensure market vendors were able to be successful, and market visitors could stay safe. The Leduc Farmers Market gained it’s official status as an Alberta Approved Farmers’ Market in 1975. Today, there are over 140 approved farmers’ markets across the province … If you see the Sunnygirl logo (pictured below), you know you’re at one!
Since 1975, the Leduc Farmers Market has called a few places home – including Alexandra Arena, Alexandra Park, and the Leduc Heritage Grain Elevator. Today, you can find them in the West Parking Lot of the Leduc Recreation Centre on Thursdays + Saturdays!
Plan Your Next Farmers’ Market Adventure
2021 SEASON: May 20 – October 2
WHEN: Thurs + Sat, 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM
WHERE: Leduc Recreation Centre West Parking Lot
Make your way over to the Leduc Recreation Centre on Thursdays + Saturdays (rain or shine) to experience everything the Leduc Farmers Market has to offer!
Farmers’ markets are independently operated, reflecting the rich culture and history of their community – and Leduc’s is no exception! You can expect to not only find unique, locally-sourced products, but be able to chat to the people that made them. Whether it’s a conversation with a local farmer at the fresh produce stand about how the growing season has been going, or learning how a local vendor began their craftsmanship journey, you’ll leave the market feeling reconnected with your community.
Parking is available directly on-site, and if you’re lucky, you may even catch a food truck parked nearby! William F. Lede Park is only a short walk away, and makes for a great impromptu picnic site. Vendors at the Leduc Farmers Market do tend to change from week to week – follow their Facebook Page if you’re curious who’s going to be setting up shop on a given market day!
